Habinteg response to draft NPPF calls for planning system to deliver inclusive housing
26 October 2011
The National Planning Policy Framework will be a central element in government proposals for a reformed planning system. It will replace the raft of existing Planning Policy statements and guidance with one short document intended to 'facilitate sustainable growth’. The NPPF risks failure to deliver inclusive, accessible housing that is fit for purpose and meets the needs of disabled and older people. The framework must encourage compliance with the Lifetime Homes Standard in new developments to deliver the accessible homes and adaptable living desperately needed in the UK.
Habinteg’s response, in line with the organisation's commitment to Lifetime Homes, concentrates on the vital role the planning system has to play in delivering inclusive housing and wider built environment, and improving accessibility to critical services and facilities.
Habinteg stresses the growing importance of this as a planning issue for an aging population, and urges the government to set out much stronger objectives to ensure that the planning system plays its full part in delivering a fairer society for disabled and older people.
